My dear Mum passed away in St Francis Hospice Blanchardstown Dublin after a brief illness. That was a wonderful place which now has a piece of my heart and I can't praise the staff highly enough. Forever in their debt I was told they loved my mother too. She had a great sense of humour and had such a laugh with them all. What they did for her will never be forgotten.
That is, this is the one and only time I haven't ran for the cause...Starfish. Felt strange but so good to see lots of runners around me running for so many good causes. To my surprise I was up front in the White wave, bib number 9499, I don't know how that happened but as it turns out there were plenty of us in this wave. Total number of runners today is 35000. I was excited to do this run for 2 reasons. Firstly because it has been 6 years since I last ran in Manchester and I have really missed it. Secondly, this was a reunion run with my friends. We first ran together (my first ever run) back in May 2002 in what was then the Women's only 5 mile run. It became the Manchester 10k run the following year in May 2003. This was my first run to raise funds for The Rutger Hauer Starfish Association. Here is a rather fuzzy polaroid group photo of the four of us.
I got lucky with the
weather this year and enjoyed the run. The lineup isn't quite the same as it was 15 years ago. A busy woman with 2 young kids, Angela hadn't found time to train and felt it best to drop out sadly but she met up with us after wards for a meal. Instead Kirsties sister-in-law Emma made up the foursome. All 3 of them were in the green wave behind me so I'd always had a feeling we wouldn't actually bump into each other at the event let alone run togther lol. I was right but this didn't stop up enjoying our respective runs and taking photo's. My run started at 11.55am and I was almost finished when the others started theirs at 1.10pm. We never saw each other on route either.
Here I am at the beginning of the run.

Then again shortly after that. Can you see me? This run was televised live on BBC2 from 11am-1pm and a friend thinks she saw me. Having watched a recording, I can't see myself so need to watch it again. Unfortunately Glynn couldn't see me at the finishline to get a photo but thats not the end of the world. As this was a fun run I wasn't expecting a PB although that would've been nice. Over halfway through this run I suddenly developed a pain in the left side of my abdomen which slowed me down a little. It went as fast as it came but then I developed a migraine in my left eye which stayed with me. So my run time was 1 hour and 10 minutes, 21 seconds. I am fine with that. I felt like I could have kept on running which is good news and as soon as I stopped I did feel sick. It took me thebest part of a week to get rid of this mysterious migraine and thus not feel sick. You can see from my postrun pix I don't look good lol
Glynn and I waited in the hotel bar to meet Angela and we ended up having a couple of (soft) drinks and chatting. I then joined the others updtairs to shower, change and drink wine. Being ill I took the non-alcoholic variety. It was fun. We found a local quite swish indian restaurant and took a group photo. It was a fun day altogether even though in the end we didn't run together. Our food was good and the staff so nice and we spent the evening catching up, reminiscing about our university days and of course talked about the run. This was a fab idea thanks Kirstie, she who got me into running all those years ago.
This will be the first time that this half Marathon has taken place and also the first time in 6 years that I have ran in Manchester. I have missed it and have now started my training. This began with a healthy eating to lose a few pounds and I have stopped swimming which I shall replace with running. Having moved house I now have a new running route too. I will get used to it but it is abit on the hilly side. It will come as no surprise to my lovely regular supporters that I am doing this to raise funds for my favourite non-profit organisation as I have done for the past 15 years. I hope to raise as much as I can for The Rutger Hauer Starfish Association and would love your support. Just so you know...I think perhaps many people don't know about the great things which The Rutger Hauer Starfish Association do. For example, they have a long distance adoption program going which helps 3 kids with their education and healthcare. It has just been updated as often the kids write very sweet letters with drawings to Starfish and its supporters.
I have secured a new job starting in September, at a local girls school in which I will look after 3 biology labs. Nervous and excited I can't wait to get stuck in now!
Those of you who know me and have read this blog will know that I have been supporting my favourite non-profit organisation since it began and for most of this journey I have been fundraising for them via my runs, which is why this blog was set up. Last week, I became a member of the Board of Scientific advisors for The Rutger Hauer Starfish Association.

http://www.rutgerhauer.org/rutgerhauer.org/board.php

I was told that this is a select group of people and I feel very honoured to have joined them. It feels rather surreal and I will do anything to help. My heartfelt thanks to Rutger and the Starfish team for thinking of me. Talk about a dream come true!

I have also wanted to whale and/or dolphin watching and am very excited at the moment. You see on Monday, in the wee small hours, I shall be travelling to the beautiful island of Ischia off the coast of Naples. I am spending a week as a volunteer living on a boat, going out to sail and monitoring marine life such as dolphins, whales, tuna, sea turtles and moonfish. This is billed as a marine biology course and trips such as these are ran by a Manchester based company called Global Nomadic. I am so grateful to them for contacting me and giving me this opportunity of a lifetime. I can't wait for my adventure to begin. Two dreams accomplished within a month.Who'd of thought it! I will of course take plenty of photos and be happy to blog about it when I get back. It may fit better on my other blog 'Chemistress'. I haven't decided yet! Wish me luck and...Happy trails....
First of all I must apologise for the delay in writing this. It is a week and a day since this run but I have had technical difficulties such as leaving my phone charger in my hotel room. Then to my surprise I switch my phone on and it is almost dead and needs recharging. It did die in the end but anyway I digress, all is well now.
So I did it! What a fabulous day. Our hotel was in the middle of nowhere so no need to go and explore, it was 2 miles from Silverstone but had a quaint Green Man pub attached to it where we would have breakfast. As we arrived too early to check in we went there for lunch and both enjoyed scampi and chips. Glynn was of course able to have a beer where as I stuck to lemonade. Good girl. Our room was huge and from our window we could see the car park and thus our car. An early night was called for and we woke up the next day to fog! We couldn't see the trees beyond the car park! Breakfast was wonderful and since the run doesn't start until noon I had plenty of time to digest it so stocked up on plenty of carbs in the form of toast and jam. The fog had lifted but it was a mighty cold day. A short drive to the F1 car park. Once parked my beloved took a photo of our car so as not to forget where he had parked it LOL. Then there is a 30 minute walk from the car park to the circuit. This could be a killer for us runners on the way back but then again this circuit wasn't designed for runners. I was so excited to see the track and to be doing this! We got there, first glimpses as we walk there. Following the queue and once inside it was a matter of taking a look around. A small charity village resided in the pit lane and there were plenty of places to get a snack and a hot drink including a canadian pancake house. So cold and I do have a semi-migraine and feel abit queasy. If I'd had a full blown one I would have had to cancel and been inconsolable. Having recently read some sound runners advice that a coffee before running is okay, we had a coffee. Let me tell you it was cold and abit windy. I was pleased though because I knew that this is my kind of running weather. I attached my time tag and my race number 7819. I also had my Garmin watch for my own accurate timing. Then our photoshoot. About 11.30am I made my way to the track. This run was 3 different laps and started and finished at Copse Corner. Seems like a long time when you are standing in the cold. I got chatting to a very bubbly girl who was doing this as training for the London Marathon in 5 weeks time. She asked why I was doing it it and I told her about Starfish. She replied 'oh thats good work, very humbling Sarah'. Such comments are rewarding and heartwarming and always welcome.
As I passed the start line I started my Garmin watch and you have to be in this situation to understand how it feels, you really do have to be there. I took it steady and really enjoyed it despite my mini-migraine. I was grateful for the cool weather and the fact that it never rained. I managed to resist the urge to use the portable toilets and was rather pleased with myself about this lol. When I picked up a bottle of lucazades sports I wished I hadn't. I gagged on it but it did alleviate my headache for a while. At this time John Lennon was on the radio and I found myself singing along to Imagine. This felt great! My headache did return a short while after but I kept on going with a renewed sense of energy. At times I wondered where Glynn was and just as I wondered where he was he would suddenly appear, call my name and click his camera. That was fun! There were 7000 runners here which is not alot, certainly alot less than I am used to. Anyway, it made for a lonely-ish run but you know what, I didn't mind this at all. To my surprise I turned a corner and there was a bridge so I had to run uphill for a few yards. Quite a few spectators on this bridge including Glynn *flash, flash* another picture! He muttered something about only being at the half way stage implying I should hurry up. I wondered if he would like to swap places. He was wrong anyway, this was 8 miles which is of course more than halfway ;) Still a steady pace I enjoyed the rest of the track and was somewhat amused to see that signs along the course hadn't been moved. Signs such as 'no overtaking' 'brake now'. Well it is an F1 course afterall I guess and perhaps its just my sense of humour. Of course towards the end I was feeling tired but very proud and at that stage where I could've kept on running anyway. I was beginning to wonder where the finishline was. It is supposed to be near where we started it didn't look like it. I turned a corner and there it was. and there was Glynn too. So I went for it and am thankful for the supporters there cheering us on. Across the line in 3 hours and immediately collecting my medal and goodie bag. The weight of my bag was not insignificant. I wondered what was in there. My medal felt a good weight too as I put it around my neck. 85grams. It is a wheel, naturally so quite different to my other medals. Very very happy I can't stop smiling. We do the usual post run photo shoot and I start to cool down. Every muscle in my body is aching but I don't care and I have no blisters. I am a runner! We walk 30 minutes back to the car and on the way Glynn says he is suitably proud and impressed. He doesn't say this often. What a marvellous day and achievement. Thank you Silverstone, I would come back and do this again. Thank you for reading if you got this far. My eternal gratitude to everyone who sponsored me and supported me. You have been doing so all along and it is precious. Your positive vibes are appreciated and make all the difference and you know how important the work is that Starfish does. I will be back to let you know the final amount of funds I have raised. Please see the links on the right to view photo's on Rutgers website and even more on mine. Bless you xxx
On a personal level I am celebrating 23 years with my fabulous photographer :) This year it also means I am now only 2 weeks away from my Silverstone Marathon, cannot wait! As its so close I can't think of anything else and am feeling excited and can't get enough of running. I am feeling fit and happy. Also I made an amazing online discovery a few days ago in the shape of The Runner Academy. This website is such a lucky find and my favourite part is the podcasts. Such inspirational stories and the best advice for runners of all levels and ages. Do check it out. I'm sure you will love it too. I'm having fun but got alot of catching up to do

http://runneracademy.com/running-podcast/

Of course by now I have my info pack from Silverstone and can tell you my race number is 7819. If you want to sponsor me for a wonderful cause which helps HIV kids all over the world with their education and healthcare, and also HIV+ mothers too, just drop me a line. All currencies welcome and no amount is too small. My email address is: Minty38@googlemail.com.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and Starfish do too

Have a great day,
Just one month today, 15th March until I run around the Silverstone F1 track for Starfish. Please do consider sponsoring me for this great cause. My training is going well and I can almost run 6 mph now. I shall improve this until I can maintain 6mph and then I'm all set for the big day.
Anyway I have just read this great article which includes a video about the science of running. Please watch, especially if you are a runner, it is very interesting.
For some people 2014 will have been a good year and for some sadly, it will have been a not so good one. I hope that 2015 is a good one for us all, may your dreams come ture and may you reach your goals. Lets all stay healthy and happy xxx
My new year always has one constant resolution, to get training and thus fit for a run to raise as many funds as possible for The Rutger Hauer Starfish Association which is always close to my heart. My last run of 2014 was on NYE and I really enjoyed it. I plan to go out for a good one tomorrow too which will be my first run of the new year.First Sunday run. I am thrilled to tell you all that I have indeed signed up to a run for Starfish, so from tomorrow I will officially be in training :) On Sunday 15th March I will be running the Silverstone Half Marathon. Yes I will be running around the F1 track and I am very excited about it! So I am of course now officially accepting sponsorship and any currency is welcome.
If you love Rutger Hauer and/or feel that you want to do something to help HIV+ children and HIV+ pregnant women, then every sponsor does make a difference. You are doing something great. Words of support and encouragement really do help me personally too. Here is a link to the wonderful updated webpage Rutger has for me on his official site. A huge thank you to him and his amazing webmasters!

http://www.rutgerhauer.org/rutgerhauer.org/sarahmarathons.php

On this page is a link to the Silverstone Half Marathon website. If anyone wants to sign up and do this run with me that would be truly awesome. There is also a link to my website and to that of my good friend and t-shirt designer Tori Ratcliffe. Very much looking forward to seeing what design she comes up with this year.
I have yet to update my website regarding this run but I have made a Facebook page. Please feel free to comment there or ask any questions you may have. I'll do my best to answer them.

https://www.facebook.com/SarahatSilverstone4Starfish

If you have a few minutes to spare looking around the Starfish website, you will learn about all the amazing things this organisation has achieved over the years and what a great human being Rutger Hauer is outside of his acting career. Also increase your awareness of the global AIDS situation and others peoples if you chose to spread the word. Anyway, I hope you find it as inspiring as I do.

Love and hugs Sarah xxx
These are my first ever sleeveless tops and I am enjoying them whilst I can over the summer season. I think I will have to purchase more in the future. This is what they look like.
As I am not in training at the moment I am swimming twice a week, tuesdays and thursdays and jogging at the weekends. As I am currently off work for the summer term I have time to run during the week too :)

I have an update regarding my last post in which I stated that I had raised £400 for Starfish. Their currency is euros and so this is the currency I send the money to them in of course. For the first time ever I made a mistake in my calculations which I didn't know until I recived my bank statement. I sent them 681 euros thinking this equated to £400 when in fact it equates to £561. I had just been paid so I don't mind, everybody wins. I will be more careful in future when I use an online currency converter :D.
Happy running one and all! xxxSarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16351852727478822464noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3409973582381668469.post-87492217358841310402014-06-22T08:26:00.002-07:002014-09-06T04:15:17.983-07:00The funds are in. Yesterday 21st of June was a good day in many ways. I feel happy as I always do when the sun is shining. As well as being the Summer Solstice, it was also International Humanist Day. I felt extra happy though as my favourite part of this whole fundraising process arrived. I emailed the funds raised this year to Starfish :D The final total was £400. I cannot stress enough how important this is and how much it means to me. If you have looked at their website you will be aware of all the amazing projects they have done since their inception and all the people in need whom they have helped. They continue to do so and this is made possible due to our help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will return when I know where I am running next year. Peace and health go with you. Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16351852727478822464noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3409973582381668469.post-66088560569812465732014-06-07T07:38:00.005-07:002014-06-07T07:38:54.424-07:00New gearI've just found an online bargain and thus made a purchase. Its only on for a few days but there is a sale on a women's sleeveless running top. it has the slogan ''This girl loves running''. There was a choice of 2 colours so I've gone for one of each. Black and cherry. I shall post pictures and I am excited for them to arrive. Its about time I got some new running shoes too ;) Take care!
First of all, thank you for visiting my blog. I have updated my website again and tweeked out all the bugs so now all photo's etc are visible. Please visit the 'about me' page to see me with Rutger Hauer. They are treasured memories and I feel very proud and lucky to say I have attended the last 2 fundraisers in the US as prt of the Starfish team. Always happy to help! You can see my report from my last run in Chester which was 3 weeks ago now. I am still collecting sponsorship for this and it is not too late if you want to sponsor me which means you will be helping people globally in their fight against AIDS/HIV. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
My friend John Schneiderwind is on a month long diet leading to a lifestyle change and is feeling better already. He is asking for $ per pound of weight loss and is aiming to lose 20 pounds. He is a week into this initiative and I believe today is weigh day so I can't wait to hear how he is doing thus far! Please consider sponsoring him. He is writing a fantastic blog about his experiences which you can find here:
Only one week ago today since I did the Chester Half marathon. What a wonderful day it was. A big thank you to our friendly and accommodating landlord for making breakfast earlier for us so we would get to the run on time. It was a gloriously hot day and any other time I would welcome a beautiful summer's day but not today. So I accepted that the run would take me longer than expected. It started at 9am on the racecourse. I was wearing my Garmin runner on my wrist which Glynn bought me from christmas and started it when we got the start line and thus started to run. This was 9.10am.

In the early stages, this run has a couple of hills but it did flatten
out and had great views everywhere. I would certainly do this run again.
The first water station appeared at mile 3 and according to my Garmin I
was 2 minutes ahead of schedule at each mile marker, i.e when I got to
mile 3 I had ran 3 miles 2 minutes. This started to tally with the
course at mile 6 when I went to a portaloo. There were plenty of water stations and one had a lady giving out bags of jelly beans. Two or three bands along the way as well. A very pleasant experience. After10.5 miles my fingers started to feel stiff and I flexed them abit and noticed they had swollen! This reminded me of Brighton all over again though I'm relieved to say I felt absolutely fine other than bigger than normal fingers. I was wearing my starfish ring on my left hand and tried to get it off, unsuccessfully.
Like I say though, I felt fine and knew I was going to get the rest of the way without any problems. That is exactly what I did! In this photo on the right >>>>>
the guy photographing me from behind is my partner Glynn. How he manages to snap me during my runs like he does is amazing. Most of the pix here are his :) So when I saw the finish line up ahead of me I just ran for it, such a great feeling. I was happy to get my medal (and goodie bag) which is very big and I did feel like I had quite a weight around my neck. The clock said 3 hours and 22 minutes but my Garmin tallies with my official certificate with a time of 3 hours and one minute. I am happy with this given the weather. I had my official photo taken and then Glynn caught up with me.

Then I went to the St John's tent where I met some lovely caring folks who inquired about my fluid intake. They concluded that I had drank to much and it all went to my fingers! Hard to believe I know, the last thing I expected. They took my blood pressure which was fine and gave me a packet of crisps whilst advising me to go to hospital if things didn't improve. Once I was home for a while and just before I had a salty meal of sausage and chips, my finger returned to normal size and I was able to remove the ring. Anyway after leaving the tent I posed for some proud after run photo's with my medal.
What a day, very memorable and I am glad to have done it. I can now say I have ran around a race course as well as an olympic stadium. This run was dedicated to 2 friends who sadly passed away last year and I spent a great deal of this day thinking about them. Suzanne Fleischman-Druge Gilbert and Margaret Lynn Hall. Thank you for looking after me today ladies, miss you lots xxx The dedication on my t-shirt, which is the same both sides is unfortunately unreadable from the photo's. It reads 'This year, my angels run with me. Suzanne Fleischman-Druge Gilbert..... Margaret Lynn Hall. Dedicated to those who supported our cause, even while losing thier own battles against cancer and addiction'
